Curious as to what else students from Singapore and Taiwan have in common besides their love for bubble tea? Close to 90 students from SUSS and Fu-Jen Catholic University came together virtually for a networking exchange session on 17 September 2022 hosted by the SUSS Cross-Cultural Immersion Interest Group (CCI IG) in collaboration with SUSS Office of Global Programmes.

Through a virtual tour of the scenic and food hotspots in the two countries, SUSS and Fu-Jen Catholic University students were able to learn more about each other’s culture and country via a student-conducted sharing. Individual accounts of the student’s everyday life from both universities gave the other a quick glimpse into a typical day in the life as an undergraduate in Singapore and Taiwan. Breakout sessions were also organised for students to chat with their peers to forge new friendships and make new connections. Feedback from the event was positive with all participants being engaged during the session.
Daniel Chong, Year 4 SUSS Accountancy student, and member of the CCI IG, who was involved in the organisation of the event shared that he hopes to see more of such events in the future. He commented, “Even though travel restrictions for most countries have eased, Taiwan still has yet to relax their entry requirements for tourists, so having an avenue to interact and connect with the Taiwanese students during this period was a great opportunity.”
In addition to learning about Taiwan’s culture, Joreen Tan, Year 3 SUSS Marketing student, found the event meaningful and fun as the diversity of SUSS students in the breakout sessions also allowed her to deepen her understanding of the different cultures in Singapore. She shares, “Through the presentations and conversations with our new friends, I realised that even though I have been to Taiwan before, there is more of the country that I have yet to discover. I am looking forward to my next trip to Taiwan, armed with insider travel tips from the locals.”
